Amorphophallus titanum

Hundreds of slack-jawed gawkers are flocking to a botanical garden in Brazil every day to view one of the world’s most bizarre plants, the giant misshapen penis flower, or Amorphophallus titanum.

The Amorphophallus titanum, sometimes referred to as titan arum and also commonly known as the “corpse flower” is a towering phallus-like tropical plant from the Sumatran rain-forests. The huge plant is the world’s biggest flower, it blossoms infrequently and only for a couple of days. The 5ft 3in specimen being cultivated at the Inhotim gardens in southern Brazil began flowering on Christmas Day and released it’s infamous pungent odour.

The titan arum is known as a carrion plant, in blossom its deep red petal-like spathe resembles a huge slab of rotting meat and the accompanying stench completes the illusion and attracts flesh-flies and carrion-eating beetles which help pollinate it. The overall effect is a massive penis-shaped flower which stinks like a corpse and is only ever witnessed once in a blue moon.
