Adam Pearson

27-year-old Adam Pearson from Croydon, London suffers from neurofibromatosis, a genetic condition which causes tumours to grow on nerve endings. Adam’s severe form of NF has left him terribly disfigured and motivated him into becoming an active campaigner for ‘face equality’ through the organisation Changing Faces.

As part of Face Your Fears week Changing Faces is asking people to face their fears for a charity event. That could mean getting sponsored by family and friends to handle tarantulas or snakes, perhaps facing your fear of needles by getting multiple body piercings or overcoming your terror of toilets by sitting on a well-used festival porta-potty. In Adam’s case it’s a fear of falling thousands of feet from an aeroplane that he’s decided to face.

“I don’t have a fear of heights but I do have a fear of falling.” Adam told the Croydon Guardian.

“It is really important to raise awareness about facial disfigurement and if jumping out of a plane is going to help then so be it.”

Last year Adam appeared in Channel 4 documentary Beauty and the Beast: the Ugly Face of Prejudice. The show was a small step towards Adam’s dream of changing people’s attitudes about disfigured people.

“I’m under no delusion that these attitudes are going to change over night, this is a long and up hill battle. Though now that the debate has started, hopefully it can continue.”

Adam isn’t doing this daredevil stunt for the good of his health, head on over to www.justgiving.com/adampearsonskydive/ now and make your donation.
