Rock legends REM have announced they are splitting up, after 31 years of working together.

The band made a statement on their website today (Wednesday 21st September).

“We have decided to call it a day as a band,” they said.

“To anyone who ever felt touched by our music, our deepest thanks for listening.”

Over the 31 years they were together the band produced 15 studio albums, they’re real breakthrough came with 1988′s Green album, they then preceded to dominate the 1990s with four massive records, Out of Time, Automatic for the People, Monster and New Adventures in Hi-Fi. Original thick-eyebrowed drummer Bill Berry left the band in 1997. The remaining members, Michael Stipe, Mike Mills and Peter Buck continued as a three-piece enlisting sessions drummers.

Their last album, Collapse into Now was released in March this year and became the band’s tenth top-ten album.
