A man from Stockport, Cheshire, reported this week that a five-foot-long cobra reared up and tried to bite him, in a field next to a primary school in Edgeley.

Police followed up on the report, and assisted by RSPCA inspectors they carried out a thorough search of the fields adjacent to Bridgehall Primary School in in Edgeley. They also carried out a door-to-door enquiry in the area.

The initial report came from a man who says he identified the snake as a cobra due to it’s shape and the way it reared up its head. Head rearing is fairly common amongst snakes, but only the cobras and false cobra have the iconic hood.

The police search has failed to produce any snake, cobra or otherwise, but worried residents are now avoiding the area until the matter is settled. Greater Manchester Police are checking licensing records to determine who in the area owns large venomous serpents.
