Darnell and HareThe parents of a toddler who was killed by their pet snake have each been sentenced to 12 years in prison.

Jaren Hare and her boyfriend Charles Darnell were both convicted of third-degree murder, manslaughter and child abuse back in July. They were on trial over the death of Hare’s two-year-old daughter, Shaiunna who was killed in July 2009 by Darnell’s eight-foot-long albino Burmese python.

The large snake was reported to be underfed and housed insecurely, it escaped from it’s enclosure in the middle of the night and made its way into the toddler’s bedroom. Darnell discovered the snake wrapped around the dead child the following morning, after attacking it with a meat cleaver he made an emotional call to emergency services. The snake survived and was rehoused.

After refusing a plea deal which would have capped their sentence at ten years, the couple now face 12 years inside, plus five years probation on their eventual release.
