Boa constrictor inside a Mini Cooper

A mechanic at a garage in Oxford found more than an engine when he popped the bonnet of the Mini Cooper he was working on.

Steve Spacksman who works at Carringtons of Oxford was carrying out the MOT on a customer’s Mini when he and colleague Wayne Hunt lifted the bonnet and discovered a seven-foot-long boa constrictor coiled up behind the headlamps.

“I have not seen anything like that in my life. We gave it a bit of a poke and it started to disappear into the car panels.” Spacksman said.

“In all the years I have worked as a vehicle technician, I have never seen anything like it.”

The snake was clearly an escaped pet, as boa constrictors are not native to the UK and require warmer climes to thrive. But the car’s owner had no idea where the reptile had come from, or how long it had been living in his engine compartment.

He was however quite happy to reach into the engine, grab the serpent and remove it, so he could take his car away.

The snake was placed in a suitable container and the RSPCA collected it the following day. It has since been rehoused with a lovely family from Hertfordshire.
