The cast of BBC’s Merlin have been in San Diego this weekend at Comic-Con, and it was announced that a fifth season has been commissioned for production after season four airs later this year.
There were sneak previews of season four shown during the convention, watch out for those, we’ll post the videos as soon as the BBC release better quality versions.
But the biggest surprise was the announcement of a fifth season, before the fourth has even gone out. Very brave, especially considering last year there was a slump in viewers and a feeling that the series was becoming stagnant. Season four even had the number of episodes reduced at one stage, but that number was then increased back to 13.
The international response seems to have been enough for the BBC to stick with Merlin, and season five will again follow the 13-episode format.
Season four is due to begin sometime in October on BBC1.
