Julia Immonen and Kate Richardson
The team of ladies were brought together by team leader Julia Immonen who works for Sky Sports and recently founded Sport Against Trafficking, an organisation dedicated to raising funds and awareness to help combat human traffickers.
As part of Julia’s campaign to raise cash for projects which tackle human trafficking she came up with the idea of Row For Freedom, putting together a team of six girls to compete in the Woodvale Challenge.
The team of ladies, who consider themselves novice rowers, will begin their crossing at La Gomera in the Canary Isles on 4th December and hope to row the 2,550 nautical miles to Barbados in less than 45 days. For those 45 days the girls will have to be completely self sufficient, they have to carry all their supplies and can’t receive any outside help once they embark on their incredible journey.
The six ladies will be making their crossing in a craft named the Oystershack, the facilities on the boat will obviously be minimal, that means no potty and close sleeping quarters. Which brings us nicely to the naked part, it is common amongst cross Atlantic rowers to complete their journeys totally stark bollock naked, as this is apparently the best way to prevent painful and uncomfortable chaffing.
Now watch this video to meet the full team of young lovelies which Julia has put together, and whilst you’re thinking of the six of them dripping wet and naked rowing across the ocean, dip into your pockets and make a donation here: Row For Freedom
