Two-headed babyA shocked couple from China have become parents to a two-headed baby.

The parents, farmers from China’s Sichuan province, were unaware of their child’s abnormality until just two days before the infant was delivered by Caesarean section.

The child is actually twin sisters who have separate heads and spines but share most internal organs. This abnormal embryonic development is usually spotted well before birth and in civilized societies the birth is aborted. It is believed that this case was missed, despite ultrasound scans, because the foetus was viewed in profile and only one bonce was seen.

Separating the sisters would mean certain death for one of them, and the parents are worried about the cost of raising a two-headed child. Baby girls are traditionally unpopular in China, particularly among rural communities where a son would be wanted to work on the farm. Now this couple not only have a daughter, but a two-headed one to boot.
