Pat Bertoletti put his toilet paper in the fridge last night after the world’s second greatest competitive eater achieved a clear victory at the La Costena ‘Feel the Heat’ Jalapeño Eating Championships, and even scored a new world record.
‘Feel the Heat’ is always a close run contest with Bertoletti going head to head with the world’s top female gurgitator, 7.5 stone Sonya Thomas. For the past two years the pair have been in tie-break situations which required extra time of eating to determine a winner, the two athletes have stolen the title from each other on previous occasions and Thomas had everything to play for if she wanted to take the crown back from the current champion Bertoletti.
This year though, Bertoletti stormed to a clear victory and matched his tally for last year, but within the allocated time! The young chef from Chicago managed to guzzle a remarkable 275 whole pickled jalapeños in just eight minutes. Thomas just couldn’t keep up with Bertoletti this year, despite managing a respectable 224 jalapeños and taking second place.
Erik “The Red” Denmark limped in at third place with an unimpressive 121 jalapeños, and fourth place went to first time competitor Alex Hernandez, a local man who ate 110 of the hot peppers.
