Pat BertolettiThis week saw two major events in the competitive eating calendar, The Wingstop World Wing-Eating Championships in Dallas and The World Deep-Fried Asparagus Eating Championships in California.

The events saw the two biggest names in competitive eating go head to head, and world #2 gurgitator Pat Bertoletti is not making it easy for current champ Joey Chestnut.

Wednesday saw The Wingstop World Wing-Eating Championships at Victory Plaza in Dallas. All the big eaters turned out, but it was the young Bertoletti who stormed to victory with an amazing 288 wings in 12 minutes, that’s 4.865kg. Second place went to Bob Shoudt with an impressive 4.649kg in chicken meat. The world’s number one competitive eater Joey Chestnut only managed third place, and top female gurgitator, and chicken wing record holder Sonya Thomas only limped into fourth position.

Yesterday Chestnut did manage to claw back some dignity though at The World Deep-Fried Asparagus Eating Championships in Stockton, California. Chestnut took first place, and set a new world record by guzzling 4kg of deep fried veg in ten minutes, that beat his previous record set last year by around 400g.

Bertoletti put up a real good fight though, the Chicago chef took second place with 3.175kg, all the time edging closer to knocking Chestnut off his perch and taking the title of world’s number one competitive eater.
