Blue BullsPolice investigating a spate of horrific axe murders in South Africa have arrested a former professional sportsman who played for the Blue Bulls rugby football club.

An unnamed 34-year-old man was arrested on Tuesday in connection with at least three axe murders carried out in Durban. A spate of attacks have taken place in the past few weeks leaving four men dead, either decapitated or with axe wounds to the neck. One other man managed to escape an axe-wielding attacker last week.

Police spokesperson Vincent Mdunge gave a statement saying that the suspect had been arrested at his home in Durban, he confirmed that the suspect was a former player for the Blue Bulls who had played in both the Vodacom Cup and Currie Cup, but refused to name him.

Police have confiscated blood soaked clothes and an axe which they believe to be the murder weapon.

The motive for the attacks appears to be revenge after the suspects daughter was gang raped and infected with the HIV virus. The arrested man will appear in court on Thursday.
