Nicholas CourtneyNicholas Courtney, the much loved Doctor Who actor has died aged 81.

Courtney played the superbly British, and moustachioed, Brigadier Lethbridge-Stewart from 1968 (whilst just a colonel) right up until 2008 when the character appeared in Doctor Who spin-off The Sarah Jane Adventures. During his many years of service the Brigadier worked alongside five different incarnations of the iconic Time Lord. The Brigadier first appeared in the 1968 episode called The Web of Fear when Patrick Troughton was playing the Doctor. When Jon Pertwee became the new regenerated Doctor he was exiled to Earth and the Brigadier became a regular cast member as head of UNIT (United Nations Intelligence Taskforce), sharing many an adventure with the Doctor and his sexy female 70s assistants.

Courtney continued to make regular appearances in the show, long after the Doctor was eventually permitted to leave Earth in his Tardis, the Brigadier managed to pop up in episodes with Tom Baker and Peter Davison, he even appeared in the special Five Doctors episode. Courtney’s last time working with the Doctor was alongside Sylvester McCoy in the 1989 episode entitled Battlefield.
