Alik Gershon
Chess grandmaster Alik Gershon snatched the world title back from Iranian grandmaster Morteza Mahjoob this week when he played 523 games of chess simultaneously in Rabin Square in Tel Aviv.
Now on the surface this looked like quite an easy record to achieve, almost any idiot can play 523 simultaneous games of chess, but for the record to succeed Gershon also had to win at least 80% of the games. That makes things a little more difficult, especially when people like chess prodigy Natan Sharansky turn up as one of your opponents.
In total Gershon managed to win 454 of his games, drew 58 and lost 11, which gave him a result of 92%.
“Hopefully this is the only war we are going to have with this enemy, ever.” Gershon said of the tensions between Israel and Iran.
