A woman in Oregon has been diagnosed with the bubonic plague, otherwise known as the Black Death.

The plague is spread by fleas from infected rodents and was responsible for the deaths of over 30% of the entire European population during the last full blown outbreak of the disease.

The symptoms of bubonic plague include vomiting blood, fever, diarrhoea, and spots which turn black as the infected flesh decomposes. The infection also causes swelling of lymph glands known as buboes, which is where the disease gets it’s name.

Doctors are currently treating the woman with antibiotics and authorities are trying to trace the source of the infection.
