This weekend saw two Major League Eating sanctioned events, the Upper Crust World Pizza Eating Championships in Boston and the World Tamale Eating Championships in Texas.

There was a little controversy at the World Pizza Eating Championships when world number three competitive eater Pat Bertoletti drunkenly tweeted thatJoey Chestnut was his only competition in the event.

Those 12 beers seem to have had an adverse effect on the eater who usually excels at the pizza eating events, Bertoletti is eating humble pie this morning after he was knocked into third place by Bob Shoudt. The end results were:

1st place: Joey Chestnut with 37 slices in ten minutes
2nd: Bob Shoudt 36 slices
3rd: Bertoletti 29 slices

Chestnut’s total is a new record for this particular event and type of pizza.

Meanwhile over at the Tamale Eating Championships in Texas Timothy Janus pipped Sonya ‘the Black Widow’ Thomas to the post by out eating her by just 3 tamales. Last year’s winner Juliet Lee was absent from yesterday’s competition and her record of 48 tamales was smashed by Janus and Thomas as they went head to head to win the $1,500 first prize.

It was Janus that emerged victorious, the gurgitator managed to guzzle 59 tamales in 12 minutes, with Thomas close behind him on 56.

Also this weekend a non-MLE event was held in New York. The NYC Dumpling Eating Contest was part of a dumpling festival held in New York’s Lower East Side this weekend.

The contest is a two-minute event and Joe Menchetti won the men’s title by consuming 55 dumplings in the time allocated. Floria Lee won the women’s heat with 38 dumplings down her neck.
