Great white sharkWitnesses have described the horrific scene in South Africa when a swimmer was killed by a great white shark this week.

29-year-old Khanyisile Momoza was one of a group of 12 people who swam out to illegally fish for perlemoen, a valuable delicacy similar to oysters.

The group were returning from their poaching on Tuesday morning, three miles offshore when they spotted the great white circling them. Momoza was at the back of the group and the terrified swimmers say they were helpless to save him as they swam for their lives.

“There was screaming and crying. We just swam, we didn’t look back.” One witness told the local press.

“We were swimming in a group but he was a bit behind us.”

“It jumped out of the water with him and then it took him down.”

No remains have been found and this is the second death by a great white attack in South Africa this year. In January a Zimbabwean tourist was attacked by a great white off the coast of South Africa, all that was ever found of the swimmer were his goggles.
