I bet you never thought you’d see the day when a third Bill and Ted movie was announced.
Last week Matrix star Keanu Reeves joked at the Toronto International Film Festival about returning to the role which catapulted him to superstardom, and this weekend his co-star, who unfortunately didn’t get catapulted quite as far, has confirmed it.
Alex Winter spoke to MTV e few days ago as they chased up the rumours started by Reeves, and Winter told them that writers Chris Matheson and Ed Solomon who penned the first two movies were currently working on a screenplay.
“We’ve been working on it for the past couple of years, honing that idea and getting it into shape,” Winter said.
“[Screenwriters Chris Matheson and Ed Solomon] are working on it now. The bottom line is that we still all feel like we need to sit down and look at a script and see if it’s everything that it can be before we set about doing anything with it.”
Winter also addressed the huge problem of a dead original cast member. Comedian George Carlin played Rufus, the pair’s time-travelling mentor in the movies, but he sadly passed away in 2008.
“We’re working our way through it right now,” said Winter.
“It’s really complicated. He was such a big part of the spirit of the originals, and we’ve been trying to be clever about making a new one that can handle the Carlin issue. It’s actually stopped us in the past — why do it without Rufus? We’ve been delicate about moving around him.”
Winter made very clear which route they were taking.
“We’re definitely not going to recast Rufus”
