Woman sentenced to just one year for killing albino baby

A woman in Kenya has been given a one year prison sentence for killing her four-month-old baby because it was an albino.
23-year-old Sara Kemunto Nyabuto was found guilty of unlawfully and willfully killing her infant daughter Esther Moraa on 2nd August and dumping her body in the river.
Nyabuto had told the court that her husband had convinced her to murder the baby because her albinism was a ‘bad omen” and ‘a disgrace to the family’. It was also revealed that the husband was not the child’s father.
A muder investigation began when the child’s lifeless body was found floating along a river in the Nyamache district of Kenya. Nyabuto was identified as the mother and arrested, she confessed to suffocating the baby and was formally charged.
The husband remains at large, he disappeared soon after the child’s body was discovered.

It will take lots of education to teach individuals that albinism is not a curse. Please do not blame this woman. I am a person with albinism and my mother learnedlots about the world because of me. She worried about me until the day she died at age 93!

Why can’t people understand that it is not an act of witchcraft or a bad omen. It is sick that we live in a world like this my son was born last December with albinism and there is nothing more perfect than him!

Though it is a very sad fate for the baby girl, one must understand the culture these people grow up believing and that this isn’t the U.S. Shamanism, voodoo, and witchdoctors are a strong influence in this culture so it is very easy for people to believe in bad omens and curses. People around the world just need to be educated, but even then culture and beliefs are hard to break. We can only pray for the family and hope they learn that albinism is not a curse.
