Saltwater crocodiles in the English Channel

Beaches in northern France were closed yesterday after reports of a crocodile swimming in the sea at Boulogne-sur-Mer.

Two witnesses reported spotting a crocodile swimming alongside tourist boats in the port. Local zoos were contacted to see if any of their reptiles had escaped, but none were reported missing. Despite this authorities decided to go ahead and close the beaches anyway.

The crocodile reports came just days after a shark scare at the beaches. Following a search of the area by police the beaches were reopened again.

Some people have begun speculating that this sighting may be in some way connected to the recent sighting of a mystery sea creature off the coast of Devon last month.
