The people of Peru are currently struggling against two deadly foes, in the north of the country people are succumbing to the Black Death and in the Amazon regions hundreds have been attacked by rabid vampire bats.

Four children have so far died after being bitten by deadly vampire bats which are carrying the rabies virus. The Peruvian health ministry has sent urgent medical assistance to the area after more than 500 people have been attacked by the winged blood-suckers.

The outbreak of vampire attacks is being blamed on seasonally low temperatures and deforestation.

If the Peruvians manage to escape the deadly flying creatures they still have to avoid the plague. There have been three deaths from plague in the area, not only the nasty bubonic plague passed on by fleas and spread by rats but also the more serious pneumonic type which is spread through coughing and sneezing.

Peruvian Health Minister Oscar Ugarte has assured the people of Peru that the outbreak is under control, on top of the three deaths from the disease there are a further 31 cases of infection. The last time there was an outbreak of the plague in Peru was in 1994 when 35 people died from the disease and 1,100 others were in infected.
