Sam Worthington of Avatar, Clash of the Titans and Terminator: Salvation fame has been confirmed for the part of British comic book hero Dan Dare.
Dan Dare was created by Frank Hampson back in 1950 when he first appeared in the Eagle comic. The original Dan Dare was a Biggles-esque pilot set in the 1990s fighting aliens with bulbous green heads. In the late 1970s the character was completely revamped for it’s debut in 2000ad, Dare was transferred much further into the future and eventually into outer space.
2000ad eventually axed the character after only a couple of years, but Dare lived on in the re-launched Eagle comic during the 1980s and most recently had a seven issue mini-series published by Virgin Comics and written by Garth Ennis. We’re hoping that when Warner Bros. make the new movie with Worthington they’ll take inspiration from the Ennis version.
