News slipped out from the San Diego Comic-Con yesterday that Star Trek and Lord of the Rings actor Karl Urban is about to be offered the part of Judge Dredd in the forthcoming reboot.
Rich Johnston at Bleeding Cool got the scoop, and they reckon Urban will definitely be up for the role. The new Judge Dredd has a screenplay written by Alex Garland who wrote 28 Days Later and it promises to be a darker, grittier film than the 1995 disaster starring Sylvester Stallone. The film’s producers are currently describing their vision as Die Hard crossed with Bladerunner, which is really a very ambitious claim, but fingers crossed.
One thing that has been confirmed is that if Urban does take the role, he will be agreeing to keep his face hidden for the entire movie. Back in ’95 Judge Dredd fans were frankly appalled when Stallone removes his iconic helmet within the first few minutes. Dredd’s face has never been clearly revealed in the 33 years the character has been appearing in the British comic 2000ad.
