Claire Lawrence and Sidney
The event takes place every year as part of the Congham Church Fete, hundreds of competitors gather from all over the globe to pit their molluscs against each other and see which is fastest. The snails are raced on a circular course with a 13 inch radius, the competitors are placed in the centre of the race course and slide out to the edge.
This year’s winner was Sidney, owned by 52-year-old Claire Lawrence who found him at the bottom of her garden. Sidney managed the fastest time on Saturday with 3mins 41secs, which is a long way off the world record of 2mins set by a snail called Archie in 1995.
Mrs Lawrence received a silver tankard which was filled with lettuce leaves for Sidney.
