Takeru KobayashiTakeru Kobayashi was released from custody earlier today following his arrest yesterday during Nathan’s Famous Fourth of July International Hot Dog Eating Contest held at Coney Island.

The six time champ of the event was charged with four counts including disorderly conduct, resisting arrest, obstruction of property and trespassing, but his lawyer says it was all a misunderstanding.

“A security guard from Nathan’s gestured for him to get onstage,” Kobayashi’s lawyer said today.

“The police grabbed him from behind, which startled him. I hope all the charges will be dropped.”

The Japanese gurgitator was arrested after invading the stage during the contest, he says he was there to cheer the other contestants on.

“I went as a spectator to cheer on my buddies that I used to eat with,” Kobayashi said after being released.

“Everyone in the crowd kept chanting ‘let him eat, let him eat’. So I jumped onto the stage to prove that I am still the champ, but I was arrested.”

Speaking of his time behind bars Kobayashi told reporters, “I am very hungry, I wish there were hot dogs in jail.”

Kobayashi didn’t get a hot dog but he was given a peanut butter and jelly sandwich and milk while in custody. His case has been adjourned until 5th August.
