Mohammed AnjumA child sex abuse trial in Middlesbrough is becoming more and more bizarre as courtroom accusations and insults are blurted out by witnesses and barristers.

53 year old Mohammed Anjum, a devout Muslim of Egmont Road Middlesbrough already has a previous conviction for the indecent assault of two young girls, he was convicted in 1994 and sentenced to four years in prison. Now he is back in Teeside Crown Court once again accused of sexually abusing children, and more besides.

It is alleged that Pakistani born Anjum pulled up his robe and exposed himself to two young children, witnesses said that under Anjum’s traditional robes he wore little pink knickers and covered his genitals with gold glitter. Anjum is then said to have performed an unspecified sex act.

In court this week Anjum denied the allegations saying “I never bought pink knickers in my life”.

The mother of the two children gave evidence against Anjum on Wednesday and made a number of bizarre outbursts from the witness stand daring the defendant to abuse her children again and calling him Gary Glitter.

“Sexually abuse my child now, I dare you, in front of Judge Fox. I dare you. You coward. Gary Glitter. Disgusting. Dirty pervert. I’m enjoying this. I’m enjoying speaking the truth.” The woman shouted.

The woman went on to accuse Mr Anjum and his estranged wife of practicing black magic and compared them to Fred and Rose West. The court heard how the woman had reported Anjum to the police for brainwashing her brother into believing he was possessed by the devil and performing an exorcism on him. It is also believed that the same woman is responsible for an anonymous complaint to the Department for Work and Pensions about Mr Anjum who is alleged to have a £13million fortune in gemstones despite being unemployed and claiming benefits.

Anjum’s barrister Tony Hawks called the witness a “bizarre and deranged woman” and during cross examination accused her of being determined to ruin Mr Anjum. When Mr Hawks asked the witness if she was actually serious about her allegations of black magic and demonic possession the woman said she had reasonable grounds to make such allegations, but added that “this is not a witch trial and it’s not a sequel to a Harry Potter movie. This is a sex abuse case. I’m here to testify about what my son has told me.”

When Mr Anjum himself took to the stand Mr Hawks was compelled to ask if any of the allegations were true.

“I never thought I’d have to ask anybody this question in my career at the Bar, but are you a black magician?”

“No,” replied Anjum.

When Anjum was cross examined by Prosecutor Matthew Bean he claimed that the children were liars.

“Every detail of the account the children gave is a lie?” Mr Bean asked.

“That’s correct” Anjum replied.

When pushed again for an answer to whether the children were telling the truth Anjum insisted the children’s testimonies were “absurd and blatant lies.”

Mr Anjum denies the charges of sexual assault and of engaging in sexual activity in front of a child and insists the mother of the children making the allegations is mentally ill.
