A surgeon at a hospital in Bury, Greater Manchester admitted he even surprised himself by accidentally removing a patients testicle instead of the cyst growing on it.
Dr Sulieman Al Hourani is being tried in his absence after buggering off to Jordan following his sacking from Fairfield General Hospital in Bury for stealing drugs.
The General Medical Council heard today how Dr Al Hourani was supposed to be removing a cyst from an unnamed patients right testicle, but managed to chop off the entire testicle by mistake. According to reports filed following the incident in 2007, the man’s scrotum was sliced open and Dr Al Hourani was performing the cyst removal but removed the entire testicle by mistake. Theatre staff didn’t see the actual testicle being removed, a nurse assisting Dr Al Hourani said she turned away from a brief amount of time to prepare a stitch and when she turned back the bollock was gone.
Immediately after the cock-up all theatre staff filled out the appropriate documentation to record the blunder.
Following the testicle incident Dr Al Hourani was also accused of stealing drugs and injecting himself with sedatives meant for other patients. The doctor is alleged to have stolen two boxes of dihydrocodeine from a storage room at Fairfield Hospital, following an investigation he was fired from his job and returned to Jordan where he is still practicing.
Dr Al Hourani has refused to “engage” with the GMC and failed to attend the hearing or appoint solicitors to represent him.
