The world number three competitive eater, Pat Bertoletti travelled to Australia this week to compete in the world’s first Sports Slurping Championship.
Sports Slurping was eventually officially recognised as a sport by Major League Eating and their governing body, the International Federation of Competitive Eating in June last year after thousands of slurpers lobbied almost every sporting body in the world. Sports Slurping is the competitive slurping of Slurpee, the partially frozen beverage sold by the 7-Eleven convenience stores since the 1960s. Competitors have the added hazard of potential brain-freeze whilst competing, which makes Sports Slurping a sport for serious athletes.
And that’s where Pat “The Ice Man” Bertoletti comes in. The Ice Man travelled to Australia this week to take part in three Sports Slurping Time Trials held in Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane competing against the local talent. And Bertoletti showed the Aussies just why he’s ranked third in the world, by setting a brand new world record of nine seconds to consume a full 650ml Slurpee.
Bertoletti was joined on his excursion by fellow Major League Eater, Hall Hunt. Hunt acted as the official referee at the MLE sanctioned events.
