Producer Neal H. Moritz has been talking about the development of the long awaited Preacher movie.

Firstly director Sam Mendes is definitely off the project. Mendes will be too busy working on the next James Bond movie to be able to take on directing duties for Preacher.

“We were originally talking with Sam Mendes about doing the movie, [but] Sam is going to go off and do the Bond movie, so there’s another director that we’re talking to right now.” Moritz told Collider.

But the good news is that a script has been written by John August and they plan to begin shooting the movie next year. Moritz explained that they were struggling to try to condense the Preacher story into just one film, so instead they’re considering a possible trilogy.

“The hardest thing with all the Preacher books was how to distill it down. And [John August] made a smart decision—instead of trying to cram everything into one, there’s plenty of room for two or three movies. So that’s what he’s done, and he’s done a really faithful adaptation but made it probably more accessible to a broader audience right now. That movie’s definitely R-rated and it’s an amazing central character.”

It’s too early for any casting news, but the rumour John Cusack was going to be playing Jesse Custer seems to have been a bit premature. The 2012 star played down the rumours recently saying he hadn’t been referring to Preacher when he spoke of a movie he was interested in working on that featured a killer and a vampire.
