Police in Brazil are searching the jungles near Uauá for a man who beheaded his mother with a sickle and fled with her severed head.

The decapitated body of 54 year old Maria de Fatima Santos Nascimento was discovered on Sunday following a family argument. Police Chief Felipe Neri, investigating told reporters that 24 year old José Gilmar Santos do Nascimento had been arguing with his father when his mother Maria tried to break them up. José allegedly grabbed a sickle and hit his father in the back with it, when the mother intervened he struck her several times in the neck, which severed her brainball.

José then grabbed the head and ran barefoot into the surrounding jungle carrying it and the murder weapon, a type of short handled scythe.

Since Monday police on foot and on horseback have been searching the rural area in northeast Brazil. One unconfirmed report says that the mother’s head has been retrieved and José has been injured in a shootout, but still remains at large.

The father was released from hospital on Tuesday and says that José is suffering from a mental illness and has not taken his medication. Police Chief Neri cast doubt on this story by telling reporters that José had no history of mental illness, but he did have a history of drug abuse.
