Glen Oaks Community College in Michigan believe they’re about to enter the record books with the world’s largest meatball.
The record has not yet been officially verified by Guinness World of Records, but two official Guinness witnesses were present for the unveiling of the monster meat product yesterday. The meatball was cooked in an oven at the Glen Oaks campus for 32 hours in order to reach the required 160 degree core temperature.
Once the cooking was completed the meatball was lifted with a forklift truck onto scales. The initial weight, which included some cooking utensils was over 180kg, but that wasn’t the official weight. The meatball was then cut open and the hopes of the organisers were almost dashed when the temperature at the centre of the meatball didn’t reach the required 160 degrees.
However, once all the cooking equipment was removed, and the undercooked meat from the middle of the meatball was cut away a final weight was recorded at 115kg, which beats the previous record set in November last year by Nonni’s Italian Eatery in New Hampshire. Their meatball weighed in at 100kg.
Guinness will have to verify this record and an official result will not be known for around a month.
