Back in September 2009 The Morningstarr* reported on the blatant discrimination against the founder of the Church of Jediism by Tesco supermarket. And this week another practicing Jedi has been ordered out of a JobCentre in Southend, Essex for wearing a hood.
31 year old Chris Jarvis is a member of the Church of Jediism, which was founded in 2008 by Daniel Jones, also known as Morda Hehol. The Jediism Handbook clearly states that all Jedi “must wear a hood up in any public place of a large audience; this shows symbolism of your faith”, but Mr Jarvis was ordered by JobCentre staff to remove his hood. When Mr Jarvis protested about the violation of his religious beliefs he was marched out of the office by burly security guards.
Mr Jarvis filed an official complaint against the JobCentre and won an apology. Just days after the incident Wendy Flewers, who runs the Southend branch of JobCentre Plus wrote to Mr Jarvis offering her apologies.
“We are committed to provide a customer service which embraces diversity and respects customers’ religion.” Flewers wrote.
A Department for Work and Pensions spokesperson stated that people are asked to remove hoods for security reasons, but Muslim women are not required to remove their burqas which are not even a requirement of their faith.
