He PingpingHe Pingping, official holder of the Guinness record of world’s shortest man has sadly died aged just 21.

Standing just 73cm tall He Pingping from Wulanchabu in China was crowned the World’s Shortest Man back in 2008 after waiting a full year for Guinness to verify his claim. Since then Mr He has been seen at many events, often posing for photographs with other record holders such as Svetlana Pankratova, the woman with the world’s longest legs and Sultan Kosen who is currently the world’s tallest man.

He was in Rome last week to make a television appearance when he complained of chest pains, he was taken to hospital this weekend where he sadly died.

Craig Glenday, editor-in-chief of London-based Guinness World of Records has paid tribute to the tiny star.

“From the moment I laid on eyes on him, I knew he was someone special. He had such a cheeky smile and mischievous personality, you couldn’t help but be charmed by him.” Glenday said.

“He brightened up the lives of everyone he met, and was an inspiration to anyone considered different or unusual.”

The fight will now be on to become He’s successor. Khagendra Thapa Magar has already been trying to take the title, although he stands only 53cm tall Magar isn’t yet 18 years old and so he can’t be officially recognised as shortest man just yet. Also standing in the wings is Lin Yih-Chih of Taiwan, Guinness World of Records have yet to confirm his measurement of 67.3cm.
