Summer GlauSummer Glau, star of Firefly, The Sarah Connor Chronicles and Dollhouse has been signed up to play a lead role in NBC’s new superhero show The Cape.

The Cape is being billed as a superhero show, but it’s actually costumed heroes. In exact opposites with NBC’s other sci-fi hit, Heroes, The Cape will feature costumed heroes that don’t possess superpowers. Heroes of course is full of superheroes who don’t wear spandex.

The Cape follows the main character, Vince Faraday, an honest cop who is framed and hunted down by villains in a fantasy Los Angeles. Faraday goes underground and teams up with a group of other costumed heroes fighting crime. Australian actor David Lyons, who played Dr. Simon Brenner in ER has been cast as Faraday, but the more exciting news is that Summer Glau will be a regular addition to the cast, providing the pilot is a success.

The Hollywood Reporter says that Glau will be playing Orwell, a cute and intrepid investigative blogger who fearlessly goes after corrupt cops and costumed bad guys. They also confirm that Glau will get plenty of action in fight scenes when she goes up against these ruffians.

Human Target and Tomb Raider director Simon West will direct the pilot which has been written by Tom Wheeler. The pilot will be produced by Gail Berman, executive producer of Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Angel.
