World class competitive eater Takeru Kobayashi has broken the world record for meatball gobbling.

The Japanese speed-eater guzzled 29 meatballs in 60 seconds, smashing the previous record of 26. The record attempt took place this afternoon at Fulton Ferry Landing in New York. Kobayashi was surrounded by spectators and cheerleaders as he jammed the balls down his throat.

Although Kobayashi’s meatball eating feat will be officially recognised by Guinness World of Records, the International Federation of Competitive Eating only hold meatball eating records determined by the weight of meat eaten. Obviously Kobayashi’s new record is totally dependant on the size of meatballs eaten, and there is no indication of what Guinness set as the standard meatball and if all 29 of Kobayashi’s meatballs met that standard.

The IFOCE recognised world champion meatball eater is Sonya Thomas, who gobbled 10lbs 3oz of balls in 12 minutes.
