The all-star charity record organised by toothless punk rocker Shane MacGowan will be released on 8th March and it’s available on pre-order at 7 Digital.
The cover of Screamin’ Jay Hawkins’ I Put A Spell On You is performed by MacGowan himself and a group of his pals including Nick Cave, Johnny Depp and Bobby Gillespie. Also donating their time and talent are Paloma Faith, Eliza Doolittle, Chrissie ‘Bacon Rind’ Hynde, the Sex Pistols’ Glen Matlock and the Clash’s Mick Jones. Jones and Depp play guitar on the track, the rest of the artists provide vocals.
All proceeds from the record will go to Concern Worldwide, a charity organisation supporting the relief effort in Haiti following the devastating earthquake which took place on 12th January.
Although charity records are not supposed to be a contest, the other charity singles in aid of Haiti released by Simon Cowell in the UK and ‘We Are The World 25′ in the United States are frankly terrible. If people want to give money to the relief effort in Haiti they can do so by just make a straight donation, but if anyone wants to buy a decent record and feel like they’re saving lives then they should really be buying I Put A Spell On You and avoiding the other two releases like dysentery.
