John Wagner Talks About The New Dredd Movie

Judge Dredd creator John Wagner has told 2000ad Review that he’s read the finished screenplay for the forthcoming movie and says it’s a far better representation than the crappy 1995 version starring Sylvester Stallone.

“I have read the script (by Alex Garland) and seen Jock’s visuals. While I can’t go into detail about the content I can say that it’s high-octane, edge of the seat stuff, and gives a far truer representation of Dredd than the first movie.” Wagner said.

And speaking of the first movie Wagner added,

“I hated that plot. It was Dredd pressed through the Hollywood cliché mill, a dynastic power struggle that had little connection with the character we know from the comic.”

With 28 Days Later writer Garland on board, and now an encouraging thumbs up from the characters creator the new Dredd movie is looking promising to say the least.

If you can’t wait till the new Dredd movie is finally released (the film isn’t expected to be in cinemas until at least 2012) then with any luck the fan film being produced by 2000ad fan Steven Sterlacchini will be completed much sooner.

Sterlacchini has just begun filming a Judge Dredd spin-off which centres on the character of Judge Minty, a former street judge who takes the ‘Long Walk’ out into the Cursed Earth to take the law to the lawless. Dredd does of course make a cameo appearance in the film, which began shooting in Sheffield just before Christmas, and die hard fans will be pleased to hear he’s being played by none other than Dredd artist Greg Staples.

Find out further details and check out some of the photos of props and filming on location by going to the Judge Minty website.
