The original Nikita movie was made in 1990 starring Anne Parillaud and directed by the brilliant Luc Besson. The movie was remade three years later into a dreadful Hollywood version starring Bridget Fonda, entitled The Assassin. Even casting Gabriel Byrne and Harvey Keitel in the remake couldn’t stop it from stinking.
Then in 1997 the concept was transferred to the small screen as La Femme Nikita, with the rather sexy Peta Wilson now playing the common criminal turned beautiful, deadly assassin. The TV show was actually something of a success, La Femme Nikita ran for five seasons and built a strong cult following before it was eventually cancelled in 2001. The show’s creator Joel Surnow would later go on to create the highly popular Kiefer Sutherland show, 24.
Fast forward to today and TV company The CW, who are known for producing the shows Vampire Diaries and Supernatural, have announced a brand new remake of La Femme Nikita. The network have ordered a pilot episode which will be produced by Terminator: Salvation‘s McG, written by Peter Johnson and Craig Silverstein who have worked on Bones, and will be directed by British film director Danny Cannon. Cannon has more recently worked on episodes of CSI, although he is often remembered for the abysmal Judge Dredd movie he made in the 90s.
