Maggots
12 year old Ummi Darmiati from South Sulawesi became infested with maggots after wounds on her chest, neck and armpits weren’t treated properly two years ago. Ummi only received ‘traditional’ medicine when she was originally injured, the wounds simply festered and insects began to lay their eggs in the rotten flesh. Since then the worms have travelled under the girl’s skin to several locations around her body.
“The situation is very critical as scores of worms have infested many parts of her body, almost reaching her head, so she needs intensive treatment,” a Wahidin Sudirohusodo Hospital doctor told the Jakarta Globe.
Ummi has already undergone seven days of surgery to remove the maggots, but doctors fear she may also be suffering from glandular tuberculosis.
