Influential Australian guitarist Rowland S Howard has lost his battle against liver cancer, he passed away this morning aged just 50.
The musician had been diagnosed with liver cancer for some time and was awaiting a transplant, he was still active on the music scene and was recently forced to cancel a number of live shows due to ill health.
Howard was a crucial part in the development of Australia’s finest post-punk group The Boys Next Door, which was fronted by Nick Cave. The Boys Next Door relocated to London in 1980 and became The Birthday Party, Howard’s unique guitar sound and songwriting skills were clearly an important factor in the band’s development which not only paved the way for Nick Cave’s successful career but also influenced a generation of Australians.
Howard will most likely be best remembered for writing the Boys Next Door’s most iconic hit Shivers, which featured in the motion picture Dogs In Space starring Michael Hutchence.
