Natalie PortmanStar Wars and V for Vendetta actress Natalie Portman has been lined up to produce and star in a movie adaptation of Pride and Prejudice and Zombies.

Pride and Prejudice and Zombies is a recent novel by Seth Grahame-Smith which mashes up the Jane Austen classic Pride and Prejudice with modern zombie fiction. Austen is even credited as co-author. It sounds totally bonkers but has been a huge success, a prequel and a graphic novel version have both already been confirmed and now Portman will produce a film version.

As well as producing Portman will also star in the movie as the female lead character, Elizabeth Bennet. No further casting has been announced, so no word on who will play the “monster-hunter” Mr Darcy.

“Natalie and I are longtime passionate fans of Jane Austen’s books and this is a fresh, fun and thought-provoking way to approach her work,” producer Annette Savitch told Variety.

“The idea of zombies running rampant in 19th century England may sound odd, but it lends a modern sense of urgency to a well-known love story.”
