The controversial Miss Landmine 2009 beauty pageant reached a conclusion this week when 18 year old Dos Sopheap was crowned winner.
The event which is organised to raise awareness for landmine casualties across the world was due to be held in Cambodia earlier this year, but was cancelled when the Cambodian government banned it and forbade any contestants from leaving the country to attend elsewhere. Organiser Morten Traavik from Norway decided not to give up that easily and created a website where he hosted images of all 20 candidates and held a poll to decide who the winners should be.
The poll received 2,315 votes from over 30 countries and on Thursday, the United Nations International Day of Persons with Disabilities the winners were announced.
Dos Sopheap from Battambang Province will receive $1,000 cash and a custom-made prosthetic limb worth $15,000. The two runners up were 24 year old Song Kosal and 32 year old Thou Chorn.
