McDonald’s in Christchurch New Zealand have set the new world record for scrambled eggs with a 1.24 tonne serving.

The fast food chain used more than 20,000 eggs and over 100 litres of cream in their record breaking attempt, which was done to publicise the fact that all McDonald’s restaurants in Christchurch and Dunedin will now be using free range eggs in their breakfast menus.

The record breaking breakfast was cooked at Christchurch’s Cathedral Square on a huge hotplate and chefs used garden rakes as fish slices. A hungry crowd of spectators were all treated to a free portion of scrambled eggs for breakfast.

The McDonald’s restaurants in Christchurch and Dunedin count for around 15% of all the eggs used by McDonald’s in New Zealand, and they use over 36,000 eggs a week. McDonald’s say that nationally they consume 12 million eggs a year through their restaurants, but the country only produces 5 million free range eggs a year so farmers will have to increase their efforts if McDonald’s ever hope to make all their New Zealand restaurants free range friendly.
