“Ginger up” or “gingering” is a cruel practice used in horse husbandry. A piece of ginger is placed inside the horse’s anus or vagina in order to irritate the animal and cause it to hold it’s tail high and move around more sprightly, like a younger animal. The practice seems cruel enough for use on horses, but a teacher in Ghana has used the method to punish a disobedient three year old girl.

An unnamed teacher from the Mystical Rose School in Ghana allegedly inserted ginger into the three year old’s vagina because the girl had a bad attitude. The child returned home and told her father, Richard Sam that she was suffering from pains in the genital area and claimed that her teacher had pushed ginger into her vagina. She was rushed to hospital due to bleeding from the area and is still undergoing treatment.

The Chief Executive Officer of the school told Joy News that the teacher responsible would half her wages docked for that month as punishment, but no further action would be taken.

According to human rights activist Angela Dwamena Boakye, “gingering” is widespread in Ghana and cultural change is needed.
