Tim Conrad of Michigan has been crowned World Champion at the Rock Paper Scissors World Championships held in Toronto yesterday.
Conrad was making his first ever appearance at the annual event, although his team ‘Elite 47′ have been attending for the past four years. The championships, organised by the World RPS Society and Yahoo attracted more than 500 competitors from all over the globe. Conrad, dressed patriotically as Captain America competed against challengers from all over the United States, Canada, Mexico and even from countries as far away as Australia, New Zealand, France and Norway.
The competition saw five hours of grueling play that led up to an all American final between Conrad and fellow Elite 47 member Tom Butkin. In a dramatic climax Conrad would face Butkin, not only a fellow teammate, American and Michigander but also Conrad’s lifelong best friend. Conrad kept his nerve and used a scissors-exclusionary strategy with a lethal avalanche – beurocrat combination to win a decisive victory in straight sets, and walk away with the $7,000 in prize money.
