Albino killers in Tanzania are now at long last facing justice, seven men have been found guilty of butchering albinos and selling their body parts to witchdoctors and have been sentenced to death for their crimes. Following the international pressure on Tanzania to take control of the situation there was a visible crackdown on witchdoctors and several people were successfully prosecuted for their parts in the albino slayings which have plagued the country in the past couple of years.
All efforts seemed to be working, the guilty were being brought to justice and just as importantly the killings had ceased. That is until last month.
The International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies based in Switzerland have reported that a ten year old albino boy in the Mwanza region was attacked by a group of men with machetes, despite efforts by the boy’s father to save him the men butchered the boy mercilessly. The boys father suffered head injuries when the albino hunters hit him with one of their machetes, to stop the boy from screaming he was first decapitated by his attackers then they hacked off a single leg and fled with it.
The father was taken to hospital where he is reported to be off the critical list.
The International Red Cross are calling the situation in Tanzania a humanitarian disaster, hundreds of albinos are taking refuge in Red Cross camps as they hide from the hunters and there simply aren’t the resources to care for them all.
