Japanese television presenter Haruna Ai was last night crowned “Miss International Queen 2009″ at a transvestite beauty pageant held in Pattaya, Thailand.

Haruna is a well known celebrity in Japan. Born in 1972 as Kenji, Haruna has had full surgical procedure to turn her into a woman. She was one of 21 contestants who entered the pageant, trannies from all over the world travelled to Thailand to take part in the contest.

Thailand has a reputation for being very tolerant towards transsexuals and transvestites, the pageant was held at Tiffany’s Show which boasts being the world’s largest transsexual cabaret. The event was organised to promote tolerance and positive attitude towards transsexuals and transvestites.

Haruna was awarded with £6,000, a tiara and a trophy. Second place went to Kangsadal Wongdusadeeku from Thailand and third place went to a bloke from Brazil.
