James O'Neal“I didn’t recognize myself”

Those were the words of James O’Neal when he first saw the new face which surgeons had constructed for him. James from Redmond, Wash. has suffered for years due to his condition, called neurofibromatosis which caused huge benign tumours to grow on his face. James refused to let his startling condition control his life and managed to get a job at a major supermarket chain. It was whilst James worked at this supermarket that customers and colleagues decided to help raise funds for James to have radical surgery to correct his disfigurement.

The first attempt to remove the hideous growths on James’ face took place last November but due to excessive bleeding the operation was abruptly halted. Now a second operation has given James the facial symmetry he desired and made a massive improvement.

KOMO news in Washington have followed James since his journey began back in May 2008 when one of James’ customers Katie Knopf started the fund which eventually raised the $200,000 required to pay for the life altering surgery.
