North American Wife Carrying Championship

A couple from Maine have won the North American Wife Carrying Championship held at the Sunday River ski resort in Maine.

This was the first year that Dave and Lacey Castro of Lewiston had entered the event, and they blew away the competition by completing the course in just 54.45 seconds and grabbing first prize.

The 278-yard course has a series of different obstacles and a large muddy water hole to get through. Over 40 teams competed in the event, some travelling from as far as California.

Dave and Lacey, as North American champions are now entitled to compete in the World Championship Wife Carrying event held in Finland next summer. They also won Lacey’s weight in beer, and five times her weight in cash. Weighing in at 97lbs means that the couple walked away with 12 gallons of beer and $485.
