Zookeepers at the Marah Land zoo in Gaza City have deceived patrons by painting two donkeys black and white and passing them off as zebras.

“The children don’t know, so they call them zebras and they are happy to see something new” zoo owner Mohammed Bargouthi told Reuters.

Israeli restrictions on importing animals means the zoo has great difficulty finding new animals to exhibit. The zoo has been suffering due to the military operations in the area. Their animals have starved to death, escaped or been stolen in the past few years.

“It is the only place of entertainment left in Gaza. We used to have two zebras but they died from starvation during the military offensive. Some of the other animals escaped and died and some were stolen,” Bargouthi said to Israeli reporters.
